Operation Christmas Child

at Salem

Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has collected more than 168 million shoeboxes packed with toys and other fun items by people like you, and delivered them to boys and girls in need around the world in partnership with local churches. Many boys and girls who receive shoebox gifts also enroll in The Greatest Journey, a 12-lesson follow-up discipleship program, where they learn to follow Christ and share Him with others. Millions of boys and girls have participated in this dynamic course so far.

    Find a shoe box

We have free boxes available in the main foyer. Or you can simply find an average size shoe box. Plastic bins work well, too!

  • Girl or Boy?

Decide whether you want to fill a shoe box for a girl or boy, and the age category:

    • Age 2-4
    • Age 5-9
    • Age 10-14
  • Fill it with gifts

Samaritan's Purse recommends selecting a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies.

Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as toy cars, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.

School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.

Non-liquid Hygiene Items: toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths, etc.

Accessories: T-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries), etc.

Crafts: Make your own items such as hair bows, finger puppets, and friendship bracelets. Download instructions here.

A Personal Note: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. If you include your name and address, the child may be able to write back.

    Do Not Include

Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; candy or food; toothpaste; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.

  • Bring it back

Bring your filled box(es!) back to church by Sunday, November 24. Don't forget to place the label on it - but DO NOT TAPE THE BOX SHUT! Add $9 per box for shipping if you are able - but if this is a hardship for you, we do have some money that has been donated specifically for shipping. If you are preparing multiple boxes, you can write ONE CHECK FOR ALL and place it in one of your boxes.

We'll pray over all the boxes as a church, then we'll pack them into cartons to begin their journey!

A COOL OPTION TO CONSIDER - Pay your shipping online and print out a special tracking label, and you'll get a message from Samaritan's Purse telling you where your box is headed!
